I installed a carbon fiber engine cover on the shoe. Doesn’t really do anything besides shave a super super trivial amount of weight, but it makes me happy every time I pop the hood now haha. Luckily the Chinese make these parts very affordable nowadays. Only cost about 100$ plus shipping and it’s real. Does feel lighter than the original cover, but still pointless aside from me liking the look.

I like it. Pointless mods are sometimes (often times, really) the most fun.

If it makes you happy is it really pointless?

Haha thank you. Someone sent me that shot of my car from the last Lehigh Cars and Coffee, that was the format it came in to me.

Nope, thats why I did it. But I meant pointless more in terms of performance, because thats what most modifications I make are usually for. This was just a fun thing to add though lol. I may add a vinly Dinan sticker on top of the cover  as well since my car has the tune and carbon fiber cold air intake (still need to install that, got it used off fb marketplace, right now I just have the plain dinan one that came from the PO).

Are there any point to these engine covers in the first place?  Like are they meant as heat shielding or anything functional?  I’ve always thought they were probably just to make the engine look less like an engine to common folk.

Wait... Someone took that photo.

Then sent you a screenshot of the photo while they viewed it on their screen?

I believe they are mainly to absorb heat. This was purely an aesthetic mod though. I had seen some pictures on the forums of it done before and thought it looked awesome

A friend of a friend took a picture of it at the show by chance and sent it to my friend, then my friend mustve screenshotted and sent it to me. The kid who took the picture didn’t know me or know that his friend knew me, but when he saw the photo he instnatly reecognized it and sent it to me

Many are for sound deadening. Especially on direct injection engines because those injectors can be pretty loud.

Yeah haha now everytime she breaks down at least I’ll at least get some joy from seeing that sweet carbon fiber. Next aesthetic mod is to add a strut bar that I have, gonna try and get it powdercoated to match the gold of the coilovers. Shop around me said it would only be 40$ for powdercoating it.

And then I’ll try and do the same color with the brakes next time they need done. I think it’ll look good with the dark green

I thought that was more the role of the hood foam usually, but it’s probably a mix of both. Mercedes definitely has some loud injectors lol, I was just at training where they showed us the piezo injectors. those things are fucking big

Have a DI engine running. Remove cover. Note increase in volume. Definitely a function of both.

Not just Mercedes. You send a couple hundred bar of pressure through what's basically a solenoid and you're going to have noise. No way around it. But yeah, they are big. Do you work for Benz too?

oh yeah that's a classic color combination.  Does she break down often??

Yeah I started as a lot attendant, now I’m in sales. I know it definitely isn’t just limited to Mercedes, and personally I don’t mind the noise either

Not really but I do work on her and do little tinkering a lot. She has had some big breakdowns before
